Title: On the Gizatullin problem.

Abstract: K3 surfaces are characterized by having a nowhere vanishing rational 2-form and irregularity equal to zero. Smooth quartic surfaces in ℙ³ are such surfaces. Given a smooth quartic K3 surface S ⊂ ℙ³,Gizatullin was interested in which automorphisms of S are induced by Cremona transformations of ℙ³. Later on, Oguiso answered it for some interesting examples and he posed the following natural question:

Is every automorphism of finite order of any smooth quartic surface S ⊂ ℙ³ induced by a Cremona transformation?

In this talk, we will give a negative answer to this question by constructing a smooth quartic K3 surfaces S with Picard number two such that Aut(S) = D∞ together with an involution of S that is not derived by any element of Bir(ℙ³). More precisely, we will prove that no element of Aut(S) is induced by an element of Bir(ℙ³). This is joint work with Ana Vitoria M Quedo.

Título: Addressing Mathematics Anxiety: A Case Study in a High School in Brazil


Abstract:

Mathematics Anxiety is debilitating and causes negative impacts on students’ academic lives. In this case study, we use Participatory Action Research methodology to address Mathematics Anxiety in a public high school in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). An intervention was performed using tools such as the Growth Zone Model and the hand model of the brain in order to address anxiety and build Mathematical Resilience. The levels of Mathematics Anxiety were measured before and after the intervention using the revised MAS scale (MAS-R), and narrative records were made. The data indicate positive evidence in performing this kind of intervention, adding to the literature on building Mathematical Resilience and leading us to continue developing our practice as anxiety-informed teachers, and to recommend future interventions with bigger and more diversified samples.

Estamos divulgando a primeira edição do “Seminário Discente de Matemática – Cafémática”, organizado pelo aluno de mestrado, Caio Caetano Aguiar, o qual será realizado no dia 25 de abril (próxima terça-feira), na sala 407 (auditório da Pós-Graduação), a partir das 16h.

Neste primeiro seminário teremos dois palestrantes, o aluno de doutorado Arthur Fidalgo, e a aluna de mestrado, Karen Rodrigues.

Título:

Higher Form Brackets for even Nambu-Poisson Algebras.

Resumo: 

Let k be a field of characteristic zero and A=k\left[x_1, \ldots, x_n\right] / I with I=\left(f_1, \ldots, f_k\right) be an affine algebra. We study Nambu-Poisson brackets on A of arity m \geq 2, focussing on the case when m is even. We construct an L_{\infty}-algebroid on the cotangent complex \mathcal{L}_{A \mid k}, generalizing previous work on the case when A is a Poisson algebra. This structure is referred to as the higher form brackets. The main tool is a P_{\infty}-structure on a resolvent R of A. These P_{\infty} – and L_{\infty}-structures are merely \mathbb{Z}_2-graded for m \neq 2. We discuss several examples and propose a method to obtain new ones that we call the outer tensor product. We find a flat Nambu connection on the conormal module.
